CMC Doctor Named to Global Post

The medical and scientific excellence of the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore (CMC) continues to receive global recognition.
At the recent World Congress of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), CMC’s Dr. Nihal Thomas was named co-chair of a working group to develop diagnostic criteria and therapeutic guidelines for Diabetes 5, a disease linked to malnutrition that often leads to serious illness or death.
It is a frequently overlooked and underdiagnosed disease. It’s estimated to affect 20 to 25 million people worldwide, primarily in Asia and Africa.
The other working group co-chair is equally distinguished. She is Dr. Meredith Hawkins, an endocrinologist and founding director of the Global Diabetes Institute at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
In announcing the project, the IDF President and Professor Peter Schwarz said, “This is about equity, science, and saving lives.”
