JAWADHI HILLS APPEAL

Dear Scudder Cousins and Friends,

Please join our effort to help Christian Medial College (CMC) build a maternity hospital in the Jawadhi Hills region of South India.

The Scudder Association Foundation (SAF) is working to continue the legacy of Aunt Ida’s calling to provide desperately needed care for women in childbirth.  As you know, Ida responded to the pleas of these women by dedicating her life to their care.

We have the opportunity to carry Ida’s mission to an inaccessible mountainous location near Vellore, where the indigenous people of the Jawadhi Hills face terrible disadvantages, chief among them being woefully inadequate healthcare.  Mothers are dying.  Newborns are dying.

After careful evaluation, CMC has determined that a permanent onsite facility, delivering healthcare and education, is necessary to provide adequate care for these women. On behalf of the Scudder Association Foundation, I urge you to support our effort to assist in the building of this maternity hospital.

As Scudders we are doubly blessed.  In America we live lives of extraordinary material wealth.  We also know the commitments of our missionary ancestors.  We witness the spiritual benefits which they enjoyed in lives dedicated to the service of people in great need.  Our family legacy includes forty-one Scudders, four generations, and over a thousand person years dedicated to service in South India.

We are now presented with an opportunity to carry on their service.  Doing so, we can feel a measure of the missionaries’ grace by sharing our wealth.

Jack Gillmar and I have had the good fortune to meet the tribal people of the Jawadhi Hills.  We know their problems are great and complex.  We have met the good people from CMC who have made great strides improving the lives of these people, but CMC’s efforts are now constrained by a lack of vital infrastructure. Onsite 24-hour care will save lives.  This is our opportunity.

Jack and I believe so deeply in this mission that we will each match your gift dollar for dollar.  Your one dollar becomes three.  Our goal is $20,000.  Please participate.  This matching gift campaign will expire October 31st.

Sincerely Yours,

Jim Taylor

Jawadhi Hills Campaign – Background Information

The Jawadhi Hills (also Javadhu, Jawadhu, Javadi Hills) are an extension of the Eastern Ghats mountains about 40 miles south and west of Vellore.  This range of granite peaks is 50 miles wide by twenty miles long, reaching an altitude of 4000 feet. Their height is sufficient to produce rainfall, which leaves them clothed in green, in vivid contrast to the dry plains surrounding Vellore.
