Walter Scudder students roll up their sleeves for the environment
Improving the environment is not just talk for students at Walter Scudder School in Tindivanam, India. An October project turned words into action at the neighboring village of Melpallipattu that is home to 5,000 residents.
The seven-day National Service Scheme Camp was inaugurated with a prayer service and program orientation.
.
The students cleaned the streets and public places, planted trees, and instructed villagers in how to keep their surroundings clean and green.
The school’s headmaster, Armstrong Swamickan, says the main goal of such camps is to develop a sense of social responsibility, teamwork, and service-mindedness among students while contributing to the welfare of the community.
He pronounced the camp “a great success.”
Walter Scudder founded the school in 1872 when he turned the village school in Tindivanam into an accredited high school. The institution is coed and has over 900 students in grades six to twelve.
