Dear CMC Friends, In recognition of and to celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day 2026, the Vellore Christian Medical College Foundation is excited to announce the scheduling of its first Virtual Lecture Series event of the year entitled “Triumph over Tragedy”! On Friday, March 6th at 10 am EST, Prema Dhanraj, M.D., the former Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC) and recipient of the 2024 Padma Shree Award will share the story of her personal journey from childhood tragedy into an extraordinary adult life. “Give to Gain” is the theme of this year’s Women’s History Month, which presents an opportunity to recognize and honor women’s contributions to fostering a mindset of generosity and collaboration. Dr. Dhanraj’s story is one of Divine intervention, associated with a mother’s fervent prayers. The outcome was holistic healing accomplished through high-quality, compassionate care at CMC Vellore, a patient treatment experience that saved Prema’s life and where she later served on their medical staff in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery! After her training in medicine, Dr. Dhanraj acquired special fellowships in the United States and UK. During her 30 years of service at CMC, Dr. Dhanraj started MCh – the post graduate medical degree training program focused on advanced surgical skills and research, along with designing a Burn Unit. Like our Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, founder of CMC, Prema persisted in her mission! “Agni Raksha” founded by Dr. Dhanraj provides integrated rehabilitation for burn survivors, especially empowering women and children from marginalized communities. Dr. Prema Dhanraj’s remarkable contributions were recognized by the Plastic Surgery Education Foundation, making her the first Indian to receive such an award. We welcome you to join us!
